CONTEXT

a scaling vc firm with an opportunity

Through Design Consulting @ Cornell (DCC), I partnered with Opportuna, a venture capital firm backed by Infinitas Capital that specializes in direct secondary and late-stage primary startups. The firm aims to create a fairer investment ecosystem by enabling liquidity for founders, early investors, and key employees.

However, as the firm scales, both General Partners and Limited Partners rely on fragmented tools for fund management and investor communication — resulting in inefficiencies and limited transparency across the investment lifecycle. This lack of a unified platform revealed a clear opportunity and became the focus of our project…

THE CHALLENGE

…how might we create an intuitive, centralized platform for LPs to see where their funding goes and the results that Opportuna has produced?

After leading ux research and early vision sprints for the 0-1 product, I specifically honed in on designing a comprehensive onboarding experience + investment and portfolio fund-monitoring tool, as we worked with our client throughout the semester.

MARKET RESEARCH

understanding the product space to create a novel product

I looked at 4 other competitors in the lp portal and project management space and noted a few things.

4

Companies

Dashboards like Juniper Square were clean and digestible, with AI tools to optimize tasks

Allvue is very customizable, but trying to do too many things at once

Learnings

Provide clear and hierarchical visual insights

Integrating automation and customization makes the product easier to adopt

Show complexity gradually rather than overwhelming users with every feature at once

Tools built for a specific use case outperform those trying to do everything

USER RESEARCH

talking to professionals and pre-professionals in the finance industry to see what they value

I went out and interviewed 12 people, ranging from finance students and startup founders, to professionals working in VC and consulting, which led to 3 key pain points in users when consuming information.

Overstimulating information, lower confidence

“Sometimes important performance metrics get buried. Some terminal interfaces are too colorful and cluttered!”

Irrelevant graphs, outdated visuals

“The hardest thing is representing data clearly and effectively, like something that would be better as a bar graph vs a line graph.”

Lack of concise summaries and actionable insights

“I want to know how to take potential next steps with my data - an investment tool that predicts future prospects could save lots of time.”

IDEATION

this led us to 6 core feature areas

Through ideation and a priority matrix, we mapped out six key user flows for the MVP. I did early wireframing for each feature, but specifically focused on developing the onboarding experience for new users, as well as a portfolio monitoring + performance tracking tool.

EARLY DESIGN PROCESS

making sure every necessary feature is included, and intentional

Drawing from our research synthesis and interview findings, I mapped out page-level requirements, prioritizing certain features and leaving out non-essential ones. We then began iterating.

ITERATIONS

when iterating, i wanted the dashboard to feel more welcoming + functional

✍️ First Iteration

First portfolio concept with simple list view of investments and side bar for metrics and graphs

🌟 After

Refreshed the page layout with better visual hierarchy, and added usability features like key metrics and a performance overview graph.

FEATURE CONCEPT

i designed an ai-driven insights tool to help investors save time and optimize performance

Get projections on your portfolio’s growth, personalized insights to maximize performance, and instant answers to any investment questions.

After integrating our newly developed Opportuna branding and design system, we finalized prototypes for developer handoff, and delivered the final designs.

FINAL DESIGNS

Opportuna Investor Portal for LPs

Investor Onboarding

Creating an Account

An easy onboarding process for users to sign up for an account, and set their language and accessibility preferences.

Portfolio Performance

Overview and Holdings

A snapshot of your portfolio value and recent performance change + a holdings table and charts detailing allocations and cash flow.

AI Insights Tool

Get investment tips, ask questions, and view a timeline chart comparing predicted portfolio performance to actual.

Company Details

An expanded view highlighting stock value + growth, purchasing activity, metrics, and recent news for informed investment decisions.

LEARNINGS

this experience was my first time designing for a client, and i learned a lot!

🫂

Aligning client needs with our teams' ideas

I occasionally hopped on client calls to align on direction. Because our contact was not in the design space, I had to communicate effectively and balance the client's business strategy with the vision of our design team!

💰

Stepping into the finance space

Being my first time engaging with finance in a design context, much of it was new to both me and the team. We relied on our own research, as well as each other, to collectively navigate this space and create a well-informed product.

🩵

Leading a team with care and structure

As associate PM, I led design sprints through research and wireframing, facilitating inclusive design crits and sharing resources. I learned that it's important to lead with empathy and structure, to create a supportive team culture.

Thank you to Opportuna and our point of contact, Alban, for his feedback, receptiveness, and support throughout the semester!
